Role Reversals

Role Reversals

Titus, Role Reversals The very long Act I, scene I of Shakespeare Titus Andronicus depicts a constant flow of sudden reversals in fortune. The characters we are concerned with thus far are Titus, Lavinia, and Tamora. With each, the expected is replaced by the unexpected. This allows us to question our own lives and the ways we react when things suddenly don’t go as planned. Write an essay about the changes one of the above characters experiences and how she or he deals with the change and relate that way of dealing with it to some change you have experienced in your life. It can be a personal experience or something you know about from your readings or from film. The point is to show the way things were expected to go, what happened to cause a change, and how the person experiencing the change reacted. Use examples from the original Shakespeare language, giving Act, scene, and line numbers for each summary or quotation and indicate who the speaker is of each example. An example would be I:i:142-6. DO NOT use any modernized translation for this. Also include references to your experience and how the two are similar or different. Be sure to defend your choices with reasons and explanations. It is not enough to just point to scenes. Also be sure to proofread your essay carefully before submitting it. The essay needs to be saved as a .doc or .docx before it will upload properly. You can do this through Google Docs if you don’t have Word
