1. Identify the sampling technique used in each of these examples. It can be either simple random, systematic random, cluster, stratified random, availability, quota, purposive, or snowball sampling. Write your answer below each example. 1 point each.

a. In order to study the changes in core discussion networks over time, Mcpherson, Smith-Lovin and Brashears (2006) analyzed data from 1985 and 2004 General Social survey. Using metropolitan areas as primarily sampling units (PSUs), the GSS then draws random samples from PSUs.

b. Bell and Hartmann (2007) explored popular conceptions of diversity through in-depth interviews in four metropolitan areas. The data were collected from individuals in three specific institutional locations in each city that was included in the study: neighborhood organizations, interfaith religious initiatives, and ethnic cultural festivals. Once the interviewers gained access to these locations, they recruited study participants at events and meetings.

c. What if Bell and Hartmann (2007) sought to build a sample whose members had characteristics similar to those of the population in the metropolitan areas they studied? In order to build this sample, interviewers were instructed to interview 20 individuals each about how they conceptualize diversity, and were told to ensure that 60% of the people they interviewed were female, 75% white and 100% above the age of 18.

d. In an attempt to understand why victims of domestic violence are often reluctant to cooperate with the prosecution of batterers, Bennett, Goodman, and Dutton (1999) interviewed battered women had their previously filled out questionnaire while in the Domestic Violence Unit following the arrest of their partner. The researcher and their assistants followed up with these women and interviewed them about three months after their experience with the domestic violence unit about their experience with the criminal justice system.

e. What if instead, Bennett et al. (2007) gathered their study sample by going to the Domestic Violence Unit, interviewing woman who agreed to participate, and then asking her to refer to the study any of her friends or acquaintances who had experienced a domestic violence and whose partners had been arrested?
