Effective leadership is an integral part of the effectiveness of an organization. Bentley University as an organization has adapted the modern forms of organization, especially in its management. For example, the Vice President of the Academic Affairs adds up as the provost and the chief academic officer of the institution who is responsible for the administration, overall strategy, and the management of the academic programs and services. The provost has clearly defined roles and functions that he or she is supposed to fulfill. Additionally, the provost consists of two deans who are involved in the strategic planning of the academic affairs of the university. The provost is also mandated with ensuring that the academic affairs are aligned with the overall university’s vision and strategic plans. This type of leadership at Bentley University ensures that there is a free flow of information within the established systems. Also, it ensures that there is coordination between departments aligning them with the overall strategic plan of the university. As Hislop (76) notes, it is significant for the leaders in an organization to keep reviewing their management styles so as to keep correcting the deficiencies that are due to rise. Bentley University ensures that the academic affairs administration is in check with the emerging issues within the division through bi-weekly meetings of the dean council that is meant to implement the academic strategy and ensure the division works in collaboration with other divisions. The university has attempted to decentralize most of its decision making roles to the suitable divisions thus ensuring that decision making is effective and faster. Fulop et al (700) points out that effective organizations tend to have hierarchical structures that are characterized by a high level of decentralization.

The high level of decentralization helps organizations to make decisions at the point they are needed, and not where the involvement of the high level management is present. This concept ensures that organizations maintain a simple look despite the fact that it is a complex organization. Decision making is a crucial factor in assessing the effectiveness of an organization since it indicates the organizational behavior of a certain institution (Fulop et al 703). Delegation of decision responsibilities at Bentley University is effective since the university has created a system that supports delegation. According to Hislop (238) the management of an organization that intends to delegate decision responsibilities to others must create a system that allows delegation that is satisfactorily organized so that it can be accomplished effectively. Bentley has attempted to come up with a system that ensures delegation of decision responsibilities is possible. For example, tenure and promotion decisions are carried out in a transparent manner by starting at the departmental level progressing to the tenure and promotion committee before being considered by the dean of the respective faculty and the provost. This mechanism ensures that there is due consideration before the decision is made. Operational decisions are carried out at the division they are needed. For example, each division is required to prepare its budget and submit for approval before the fiscal year starts in February. Despite the established organizational structures it is hard to describe an organization as perfectly effective since the management of an organization keeps evolving as a result of different factors.
