According to Senge (2010) and the Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, teams that learn are made up of people who “see each other as colleagues” (p. 227), “develop a deep trust” (p. 230), “seek the common denominator in multiple individual views” (p. 231), and “develop a spirit of inquiry” (p. 244). A leader who understands how to bring out the best in teams can achieve extraordinary results. Senge also stated that those in senior leadership positions have mastered the art of understanding their own leadership styles and how those affect members of their organizations. How do a leader’s character and values affect creating a team-based organizational culture? Discuss the leadership challenge, and the role of ethics and trust, when creating and leading teams.

Leadership and team building

Organization culture can be described as the shared values and beliefs of the organization. Effective and credible leaders have tremendous personality character and sense of mission that appeal employees through their interactions and discussion. A leader should model the ways and earn credibility by clarifying their character and values; leaders also sets example through actions that reveal deep commitment to their beliefs. An effective leader must be differentiated by persistent effort, competence, steadfastness, and attention to detail. A leader inspires a shared vision and envisions the future by believing in highly attractive future for employees and organization (Senge, 2010). In order to create a team-based organization the leader must be able to create an organization climate; this enable each member of the organization feel as part of the shared organization perceptions. The organization climate depend on the leadership and management style of the current leader, based on priority of the leader, values, skills, attributes, and actions. A leader who enables others to act, foster collaboration and build trust motivates group members and acts as a unifying factor in the group. The leader also uplifts the spirit of his/her team through recognition and appreciation of member contribution (Dutton & Spreitzer, 2014).

Creating and leading team may become challenging when a team has been transformed from traditional leadership environment to a shared leadership, collaborative environment. Developing a leadership model and integrating structures and systems that are globally acceptable may pose as big challenge to leadership. Another challenge may arise when forming a team and in defining structure of the team, creating a vision and behavior systems. Other challenges may arise in cross-functional teams if the leaders lacks emotional intelligence necessary fro building trust, generate team commitment, handle conflict, maintain motivation, and give and take criticism constructively. The role of ethic and trust when crating and leading teams is to create a dedicated teams that are capable of achieving their objectives. Ethics and trusts create royalty and dedication. It is also a source of motivation to team members. Ethics make leaders become respectable and trustworthy; ethical leaders have a sense of direction because their characters convey a strong vision for the future (Hurley, 2011).
