HL7 Documentation
HL7 Documentation
The objective of this assignment is to get practice with HL7’s document standards, particularly CDA and HL7 V2. The assignment will be broken into two parts: For each part you will be given an HL7 documentation and will be asked to complete some questions about it. Your submission will be a single PDF with answers to the questions below.
Part 1: CDA XML Documentation
The assignment file was distributed with another file called CDASample01.xml. This XML file is a CDA-encoded clinical encounter, and you are required to answer the following questions about it.
- There are 5 participants in the header of the message. Identify each header participant, and the HL7 V3 RIM classes that are associated with each of them. (15 points)
- In the procedures there is an observation about a “colonic polypectomy” being performed. Provide the complete SNOMED compositional grammar format of the procedure (11 points)
- Provide the patient’s most recent BMI (4 points)
- In the results section there is a set of blood tests (CBC WO DIFFERENTIAL) with 3 values. Provide the XML code that should be added to this section for an additional outcome of a blood iron level of 12 micromol/L, and the line number at which you would add it (15 points)
Part 2: HL7 V2 Documentation
At the bottom of this assignment is a completed HL7 V2 message, about which you will answer the following questions:
- What is the message type for this message? (4 points)
- What is the patient’s ID? (2 points)
- There are four types of segments in this message, what are they? (4 points)
- The first OBX line has a SNOMED coded value, but the last 5 don’t: provide the SNOMED codes for the OBX lines 2-6 (10 points)
- Add an additional segment to the message that records the patient’s wife (Martha Johnston) as his next of kin (15 points)
Part 3: HL7 V2 vs V3
You’ve scoured through both a version 2 and a version 3 message, and explored the documentation for both. Provide a ½ – 1 page write-up on the advantages and disadvanages of using V3 messaging over V2.(20 points)
