Imagine that a new organization wide objective has arisen, which is to make the company more customers focused by pushing decision making down the hieararchy to the individuals who have face to face contact with clients. The company is 60 years old, successful and has over 5000 employees who have been with the company at least a decade. Now consider all the possible challenges or impediments to the change effort that might arise from individuals who want to continue working for the company but don’t necessarily want to alter how they perform their jobs. The list would probably be quite long. This assignment focuses your attention on this important issue and suggests some of the means by which inertia can be overcome.

Henry Demone offers insight into the successful turnaround at High Liner Foods Inc. Alex MacBeath, former Managing Partner with Grant Thornton LLP shares his ideas regarding the organizational alteration at the Canadian arm of this professional service firm. Finally, Pierre Lafontaine, the head coach of Canada’s Olympic swim team explains how Swimming Canada set out to change itself following its poor performance at the Athens Olympic games.

Experienced managers have come to understand that managing chance is a normal part of their job requirements. Indeed to some extent, that is the major aspect of their work. Think of the operations head of a professional soccer, football or hockey team. They constantly gauge the team performance and make needed change on the go, be they in the early, late, or playoff stages of the season. Think of a buyer for a major clothing store. He or she sources new products from around the world and responds to fashion changes on a daily basis. Change and managing change is a constant and for many professionals, a way of life.

 

Assignment

The aim of this assignment is to offer you insight regarding the thoughts of selected executives on the topic of the challenges associated with organizational change.  It seeks to help you make sense of change initiatives from the point of view of managers.

So why do organizations change? Most often it is to improve performance and improve how they do things. Often this takes the form of different processes and structures. In many instances decision makers wish to make these entities less bureaucratic.

This assignment leads off with a series of readings that suggest some ideal outcomes of large scale transformations. It is interesting to note that most large scale change efforts do not achieve their objectives and the efforts themselves are often years in duration. This is an important concern given that in many instances their competitive environments change so dramatically as to make the intended alteration obsolete. Just think of the great mining boom of 2003 – 2008. Growth strategies soon turned to exercises in downsizing in this industry with many small mining firms on the brink of bankruptcy. Nevertheless, change efforts occur for a reason and this final assignment helps readers to understand where many of these initiatives are headed.
