Custody Issues in America

Custody Issues in America

– Choose three specific custody issues from the attached case study that you believe are most important, and briefly describe the three areas you selected.
– Explain why you believe each of these areas is a child custody issue.
– Describe which APA Guideline(s) would apply to each of the issues you chose and why. (http://www.apa.org/practice/guidelines/child-custody.aspx)
– Explain how you might address each of these areas based on the APA Guideline(s).

Use the case study below

You receive a telephone call at your office from an attorney asking if you conduct psychological evaluations for child custody issues. You tell her that this encompasses about 25% of your forensic psychology practice. After a review of your fees, the attorney tells you the following facts about her case: the attorney’s client is the mother of the divorcing couple. The couple has two children, ages 8 (boy) and 10 (girl).

The mother also has a 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and holds custody rights to her. This 14-year-old has never met her biological father. The couple has been living together for 13 years; for 10 of those years they have been legally married. The husband is a nuclear engineer and makes a sizable income. The mother used to teach elementary school, but quit when the couple’s first child was born to stay home and raise the children. After a somewhat rocky marriage, the mother asked her husband to leave the household. That was 6 months ago and he has been living in an apartment near the family home.

The mother alleges that her husband has been cheating on her and that was why she asked him to leave. She claims that her husband has introduced the children to his latest paramour. The couple is in a dispute over everything, including the custody of all three of the children. You agree to take the case, but not until you talk with the father’s attorney. After calling the father’s attorney, you obtain more information. According to the husband, he has never cheated on his wife. He says she has been extremely jealous throughout their marriage. He claims that all he does is work because his wife “spends money like there’s no tomorrow.” He claims he has asked her to get a job and she refuses. He claims to have had to get a weekend job just to cover the bills. He reports being close to all the children, frequently taking them to doctor’s appointments, ball games, etc. He reports being the only father the 14-year-old has ever known. He reports that he has not been allowed to see any of his children for the last month because his wife refuses to let them visit. This action was taken by the wife following a “blow-up” between the couple about money issues. The father’s attorney also adds that the father is of Asian descent and the mother is Caucasian.
