  • Parental pressure: They are paying your school fees anyway. Sometimes parents can be on your neck about performance. They expect you to turn out perfect and when they express their disappointment in you, it’s easy to get angry if you gave it your all.
  • Strained relations with lecturers and comrades and roommates in the hostel
  • Frustration and hurt from life experiences that you hoped would turn otherwise such as broken relationships.
  • Harassment by authorities: You may have been mishandled by the security officers in your institution or outside. As a result you may respond angrily by fighting back or hurling insults.
  • Injustice, despite it being real or perceived: An example of injustice might be unfair marking of the examination. This may make you angry as you don’t get your expected grades.

  4. Mental Health Concerns: As pointed out, anger goes hand in hand with anxiety, stress and depression. The angrier you are the higher the risk of deteriorating your mental health. No one wants to be declared a lunatic.

Impulsive behaviors: As a way of dealing with anger, you might find yourself resorting to repetitive negative behaviors such as drug abuse, binge drinking, binge eating and over speeding to relieve the anger. These behaviors will only add to your troubles instead of helping you with the anger. It is imperative to be aware of what triggers your anger.

How to walk away from anger: Anger Management

  • Pro-activity: This is the exact opposite of being reactive. Take your time to understand what your emotions are. Do not instantly respond to the anger. This way, you will be able to handle the situation more effectively, rather than acting on impulse or giving an outburst or reciprocal hurt to the other person.
  • Exercise:
  • Exercise helps in production of a feel good hormone, endorphin. Once you exercise, you will find yourself less angry and better placed to handle disappointing situations.
  • Get Creative: Do you have creative juices flowing in your system? Then, this would be a good tool to deal with anger. Write a poem, a short story, a song, or, heck, you can even draw yourself upside down.
  • Trust me, this works so well to help relieve the tension building up. And the product of that creative moment will always remind you of that angry moment.
  • Talk about your feelings: Find a trusted friend and confide in him or her about how you feel about things. If it academic related, you can talk to an administrator who will help you sort out issues in school. And if your anger is chronic, a professional counselor will come in handy.
  • Identify possible solutions for situations that trigger your anger. It would also be prudent to avoid such situations whenever you can and concentrate on what brings out the best in you rather than the bad in you.
  • Avoid keeping grudges: No matter what someone has done, learn to forgive and let go of the negative feelings. This doesn’t mean you condone their behavior, but it gives you peace. Remember, anger emanating from grudge hurts no one else but you.
  • Empathize with the person who triggers your anger: Even if you feel hurt, try and see things from the point of view of the person who has offended you. This helps in being less egoistic and appreciating that the other side has a point too in the bone of contention. A t such a situation, you can come into an agreement with the offensive party that placates both of you.
  • Build trustful relationships: Sometimes being distrustful of the other party is a cause of anger. You misinterpret their actions or words because you don’t think they want the best for you. Trust is very essential in being able to take in information without getting angry.
  • Listen to others: By listening to others, I mean not just hearing. Pay attention to their every word and emotion they are expressing. Try to feel what they feel. Walk in their shoes.
  • This way, even if you want to get angry you will have seen things from their perspective first and hence the anger that will be triggered will be less.

While in college, you’ll face inevitable causes of anger. What’s important, though, is how you respond to it.
