Analysis of a Literary Work from the Modern Era of British Literature

Assignment: Write a 1 ½ to 2-page (double spaced, 12 point font) analysis of a literary work from the modern era of British Literature. You may write your analysis on any of the literary works covered in Unit 5 in the modern era. You may select a poem, short story, or essay. If you have another modern British Lit work in mind that you’d like to analyze that is not mentioned in the unit, please webmail me for approval.

What is Literary Analysis?

According to your lessons in Unit 5, “Literary analysis is highly focused reflection on a work of literature. When you analyze literature, you try to determine the author’s purpose for writing it. You dig deeply into the work to find the underlying theme, and you analyze elements like the plot, characters, speaker or narrator, and setting. How do these elements interact with each other?” If you analyze poetry, you might examine key images or symbols used in a poem and interpret and explain what you think they mean. “Other readers will probably interpret the literary work differently than you, so your job with literary analysis is to persuade your audience that your interpretation is correct.”
